Thomas Snook is the former Chief Trial Judge of the Coast Guard and a retired United States Administrative Law Judge. He was awarded the chemistry prize at the United States Coast Guard Academy. He has a law degree with honors from Syracuse University, where he was editor-in-chief of the International law journal. He received a master’s degree in International law, from New York University where he was taught admiralty law and mentored by Nick Healey, a renowned admiralty law practitioner and scholar.
Prior to being selected for law school he was the damage control assistant on a combat deployment off the coast of Vietnam and a marine inspection/investigating Coast Guard officer in New Orleans, LA. His Coast Guard legal assignments included assignment to the Department of Justice to litigate mainly oil pollution cases; staff judge advocate in New Orleans, where he taught at Tulane. He was assigned to the United States Mission to the United Nations in the political section, primarily as a Law of the Sea advisor. He retired from military service and practiced marine insurance defense law at a firm in Miami prior to being appointed a judge with SSA.
